A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR THE WMY

WMY Surf Contest sponsored by Epicology Clothing
Even with less than stellar surf conditions, the Whitney Marie Young Surf Contest in Torrance Beach turned out to be a blast, churning out dozens of competitors to show and compete for some seriously epic prizes on a beautiful day at the beach. From early teens to late 30’s, surfers of all ages came out to show they could still shred the smaller-than-hoped-for waves with some serious style. We have some awesome shots and coverage of the event right here.

The WMY Surf Contest at Torrance Beach sponsored by Epicology ClothingIf you haven’t been following, Epicology got to take part in the Whitney Marie Young (aka WMY) Surf Contest this year, as it held it’s 3rd annual event to remember and celebrate the life of Whitney Marie Young and to raise money to donate to the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation. The goal of which is “to encourage children and young adults to dream, live, love and laugh in ways previously unimaginable”. The event was sponsored by companies such as Quiksilver, Shaka Laka, Mattel, Dakine, Spyder, Honolua, 20foot.com, Instyle, Vitory, Pier Surf, Good Stuff, Soleo Organics, Bark, DaHui, and of course yours truly, Epicology.

From boys-14 and under to the men’s divisions, to women’s longboard and shortboard divisions, to bodyboarding divisions, everyone was able to bring their own personal piece of support to the event, showing up at the crack of dawn and staying throughout most of the day to cheer on the other competitors and show their support.

The young groms were shredding it on the mini waves, whether it was a hard schwack or a sweet and smooth barrel, they could do it – even in the less than great conditions. Longboarders threw out their tricks left and right with hang 10’s, switch stances, 180’s and even some sick handstands. The conditions left it up to creativity to sway the judges – which they and the rest of the crowd thoroughly enjoyed.

The rest of the event was a blast with raffles giving away some sick prizes, and auctioning  beautiful artwork and boards from sponsors like Quiksilver, Mattel, Shaka Laka, DaHui, Spyder and much more. The Epicology team also put on their own raffle giving away some epic gift cards for the newly launched site in mid-September.

All in all, the day went great: the weather was beautiful, contestants walking away with some sick prizes, free goodies for everyone, and not to mention it was all spent at the beach. Can’t get much better than that.
